== Name Server Settings ==

DNS stands for Domain Name Service. That is the Internet service that allows the world to find your web site when they type in your domain. It translates you domain name into and IP address. The name servers for Computer Tyme are:

Ordinarilly Computer Tyme will provide DNS services for your domain. If you are new to Computer Tyme you need to go to your registrar and set your name servers with the above information. This gives us control to set the IP addresses of all your hosts and mail exchange records. With three servers in different locations we can ensure that no matter what happens, the world will be able to find where the servers that host your site are.

== MX Record Settings ==

Normally most users don't have to mess with the MX records. But if we are providing front end spam filtering services for you and you are managing your own name server then these are the settings for the MX (Mail eXchange) records:

Ordering and numbering is important. It is also important that you not add any of your existing MX records or and other MX record to the list as it will defeat the way the spam filter works. Here's the instructions if you are [[Changing your MX records with cPanel]].

Why the dummy MX records? Real servers retry. They start at the lowest numbered MX and work their way up the list. Spammers try once and give up. Many spammers try the highest MX record first. This configuration is what we call the poor man's spam filter and it gets rid of over 90% of virus infected windows zombie spam. If you only can add 3 MX records, use this configuration.

== Direct Server Side Folder Delivery ==

The email server has the ability to deliver email directly into server side folders other than your INBOX. Suppose you are user@domain.com and you have a folder called "ebay". To send email directly to your ebay folder, send the email to:

user-ebay@domain.com

This will deliver it directly into your server side ebay folder. So you set your Ebay account to user-ebay@domain.com then your email from Ebay will go directly into your ebay folder on the server.

== Spam Folders ==

In order to use the spam folders option you have to be using IMAP and not POP. Only IMAP allows you to control server side folders.

The Computer Tyme email system allows for direct delivery to server side IMAP folders. If you create the folders using these special preassigned names then your spam will be classified and delivered into these folders. The creation of these folders signals the email system to deliver spam into the folders. Deleting these folders turns off this feature. The folders are:

spam-low - for low scoring spam
spam-high - for high scoring spam
spam-veryhigh - for very high scoring spam

The spam-low folder is for low scoring spam. These are messages that are probably spam, but if the system makes a mistake, the mistakes will end up here. Check your spam-low for false positives. If you get real spam in spam-low, please drag it to your spam-missed folder so the system can learn it.

The spam-high folder are message that are bounced back to the sender as spam. You can check this folder to see what messages were bounced.

The spam-veryhigh folder are messages that are black holed by the system. No point in wasting the effort to bounce them as the bounces could become spam for a faked sender. But you can see the email in this classification.

These spam folders do not have to be emptied out. Any email left in these folders for 7 days is automatically deleted. So if you do nothing they clean themselves out.

== Spam Learning Folders ==

We also have two feedback folders called:

spam-missed
spam-notspam

Spam missed lets the system learn any spam that sneaks through the filter. If you get spam in your inbox or spam-low then drag it into spam missed. Every 5 minutes the learn bot comes by and learns the spam. This educated the system so that the next time that spam might be rejected. The learner is common to everyone so when you let the system know about spam it help keep everyone else from getting it.

Don't drag messages from spam-high or spam-veryhigh into spam-missed. These messages are automatically learned and drapping them into spam-missed just loads down the server.

The spam-notspam tells the system to learn what isn't spam. But message put in this folder are deleted so don't put anything in there you want to keep.

== Personal Blacklist / Whitelist ==

Users can configure their own personal whitelists and blacklists using the [https://mail.ctyme.com web mail interface]. Click on "options" and you will see whitelists and blacklists that you can edit. Additionally, if you are reading a message with the web interface, you can click on links to blacklist the sender or whitelist the sender.

Whitelisting isn't foolproof. If you aren't receiving email because there is a problem with the senders server, then whitelisting doesn't fix that. But if you are getting messages in spam-low that should be in your inbox then whitelist it.

Exim Email Control Specification

This is a specification for an email control program I'd like to have written for [http://www.exim.org Exim]. I want to make this project public domain so that others can share in it. I want to keep it simple and flexible. Looking for some volunteers to work on it. I can trade significant web hosting for people who will make this happen.

=Overview=

The idea behind this project is to create a PHP front end to text files on the back end that control Exim allowing users to have a high degree of personalization over feature that primarily control spam. This would include personal white lists, personal black lists, forwarding, etc. The backend might also be a database but I'm leaning towards text files for simplicity and if done right should be very scalable. Once the structure is in place it should be easy to add a lot of customizations to give users every toy they ever dreamed of.

== Authentication - IMAP Login ==

The idea is you use IMAP for authentication. All users and managers will use an email address and password to authenticate. It will attempt to log in to the email account and if successful, the user is considered logged in. Once logged in the user will be able to set all the features of their own account. If the user is a manager they well see additional choices to manage the things they are allowed to manage.

== Control Files ==

Here is what I'm proposing for a control file structure. All of these files are test files. The directory structure is designed to be fast not having a lot of files in any one directory.

The base director contains the master control files for the entire system. Booleans and settings in the config files. The managers file contains a list of email addresses of system managers.

Under each domain is the master files that control that entire domain. This includes the passwd, shadow, and alias files that mimic the Unix passwd, shadow, and alias files. I've used a few examples of master white list and block lists but any number of files can be added for greater customization.

Each domain has a users folder which contains the user's accounts and personal settings. This allows the user to customize their own experience just the way they want. A few examples are given here but there's no limit to what you can add.

== MySQL ==

Instead of the file structure it might be better to do it all with MySQL. I do however like the simplicity of these pure text files but I could be persuaded by a good programmer and really clean code that makes it easy for people to add new features. I'd like to start with the text file interface and make database backends optional.

==Administration==

There are several levels of privileges in this system. When the user is authenticated the system knows who they are and gives them the menus they should have access to. Three levels that need to be set up are Administrators, Domain Owners, and users.

=== Master Admins ===

Master admins control the system and can set anything else. They need to be able to create new domains, grant privileges to other users, and config the system.

=== Domain Owners ===

Domain owners need dominion over their domain(s). Once they log in they can create and delete users, create aliases, manage block lists and white lists and any other settings that affect their domain. They would also have full control of all the users setting under their domains.

=== Email Users ===

Email Users would have control of their account. They can change their personal settings, vacation messages, forwarding, password, etc.

== User / Password Files ==

Currently the User Password and Alias files are stored in a directory named /etc/vmail and are just like the Unix passwd and shadow files.

== Feature Expansion ==

Once this structure is in place it should be easy to add new features. All you have to do to the front end is create a new text file to store the feature in and an Exim backend to run it. Both should be really easy. Menus can be created to allow users to block all 8 bit Asian email, Block entire continents. Block words in subject lines. Personal blackhole (rather than bounce), forward email from specific users to server side imap folders, the sky is the limit. All we have to do is do it right in the first place, keep it simple, and we all win.

== Exim Backend ==

Exim is very powerful. It's trivial to write a backend that runs off this structure. Dovecot can be easily configured to access this structure as well. However I think if this were done right it should be generic enough to work with other MTAs and a variety of configurations. The backend assumes that if the files don't exist then nothing happens. If they do exist then they are read and processed.

== So - who want's to make it happen? ==

A good programmer should be able to whip this up in a few days. I'm not much of a programmer anymore so I need someone to get it started and I can finish it. So - who wants to help get this going.
